The Kings County Pediatric Residency Program is designed to offer comprehensive, team-based clinical training with a strong focus on patient-centered, whole-child care. This ACGME-accredited program aims to cultivate residents’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes, enabling them to become exceptional pediatricians capable of managing a diverse range of patients from infancy through adolescence. The training prepares graduates for general pediatric practice as well as for those who wish to pursue subspecialty fellowship training.

Two key features of the program are its commitment to professionalism within a supportive, personalized learning culture and its emphasis on community health and advocacy. Our program offers exposure to a diverse range of patient populations and medical conditions. Throughout their training, residents gain valuable experience in caring for children in under-resourced environments and learn to advocate for vulnerable populations within multidisciplinary teams.

Residents advance through graded responsibility over the course of the three-year program. Under close faculty supervision, first-year residents concentrate on direct patient care and refine their clinical fundamentals. In the second and third years, residents assume increasing responsibilities, including independent decision-making, teaching junior learners, and supervising teams, all while under appropriate oversight. This graduated autonomy enhances residents’ confidence and judgment, ultimately equipping them for unsupervised practice as capable pediatricians. By fostering a safe, nurturing learning environment that values each individual, we aim to inspire residents to pursue their passion for pediatrics while maintaining personal well-being and professional integrity.

Each resident will have a weekly Continuity Clinic which occurs longitudinally over the three years of training. Residents find this an extremely rewarding experience as they establish an ongoing relationship with patients and families as well as follow the growth and development of their patients over time. Continuity Clinic also provides exposure to patient advocacy through collaboration with a team of Community Health Workers and resident participation in various community activities such as school-based health education sessions, community health fairs and back-to-school immunization events.

The three-year schedule is designed in 13 blocks of 28 days each (See sample at the end of this section). The first year focuses on acquiring acute care skills interspersed with some outpatient and inpatient subspecialty experiences as well as an immersive block in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at our sister site, NYC H+H/ Metropolitan in Manhattan. During the second year, residents have more ambulatory experiences including a block in Adolescent Medicine as well as additional subspecialty experiences and acute care experiences. By third year, in addition to additional ambulatory and acute care, residents will have an opportunity to develop and engage in blocks of an individualized curriculum where they can spend time with additional subspecialty services or create rotations which support their career interests and goals. Examples of these experiences may include community advocacy, quality improvement and patient safety, medical education, resident well-being, medical informatics, and medical simulation among others.
