Newly-graduated nurses joining NYC Health + Hospitals automatically embark upon a stimulating journey designed to provide our nurses with real-world, on-the-job training covering the most important aspects of our profession as part of our pioneering Nurse Residency Program.
NYC Health + Hospitals Nurse Residency Program provides newly-hired nurses with specialized training, education and mentoring services in order to promote job retention. The program helps expand opportunities and retain skilled professionals at public hospitals that deliver quality healthcare to countless New Yorkers. All full-time new hires that are recent graduates or new to their specialties are automatically enrolled in this 12-month program.
The purpose of our Nurse Residency Program is to allow participants to transition confidently from student to professional nurse, delivering first-rate patient care in a clinical environment. The curriculum includes ethics, decision making, clinical leadership, communication, conflict resolution, end-of-life care, patient safety, and the incorporation of evidence-based practices into clinical settings.
The program has had immediate and impressive results, with more than 1,486 participants to date. The Nurse Residency Program also has been expanded to six times its original size, going beyond the system’s 11 hospitals to include post-acute, Gotham Health, and Correctional Health Services.
Through the Nurse Residency Program, we are investing in New York City’s future clinical workforce of dedicated and committed professionals.
